In fast growing globalized world, that we live in, it is very important for each destination to enhance its competitiveness. Being where people are and doing what they do is a powerful instrument to build a public-orientated approach. This is the moment where Internet and new media finds its role in place branding strategies – online place branding. Acknowledging the influence of global public opinion on international and national affairs could help place brands to compete more effectively. Trends like putting emphasis on the optimization of the destination’s official websites, introducing mobile marketing through technological applications and using social media are in the spotlight of the DMOs who try to build a more personal interaction with the public.

Online branding is giving you the opportunity to experience a destination in a very interactive way. Geting a clear picture on the importance of online place branding, could be the overcoming of the challenges faced by traditional, offline place branding.


The first International Online Place Branding Conference. Designed to cover the topics that emerge from Internet as communication tools for branding places. Aimed to build ‘analogical networks’ all over the world for experts to get face-to-face communication. With this experience sharing system, we could learn from each other and generate opportunities in place brand strategies.

Covering the most relevant topics of the matter: Starting with theoretical contributions to develop the area of place branding, covering the challenges of managing a place brand, to new trends in the communication of place brands, with a focus on online development, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in presentations and round-tables. The conference is conceived so as to help all the different layers of place branding practice and theory to build a common platform of sharing experience and enriching our knowledge on the topic.


The city of Barcelona provides a perfect setting for the Conference, as it combines an emerging knowledge and technological industry and a magnificent natural and urban landscape. As a major education institution, Universitat Pompeu Fabra is a public and urban university with high level of internalization and top research standards.

The Communication Campus – Poblenou is one of the three campuses of UPF, dedicated to Information and Communication Sciences and Technology. It is located in Barcelona’s knowledge and innovation district, called 22@.

The Organization has secured accommodation in hotels located close to the conference venue. The rates are quoted in Euro, per room, per night, including buffet breakfast and taxes (8% VAT). Full prepayment is required.

Cancellation: For cancellations received until 5 September, 50% of rooms cancelled will be charged. From 6 to 21 September, 75% of rooms cancelled will be charged, from 22 September no reimbursement will be done.

Novotel Barcelona City Hotel is located 5 minutes walking distance from Conference Venue, near Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia Church, close to Agbar Tower and the Glories Shopping Centre. The hotel is near the National Theatre, and a short walk from the sea. Public bus, metro (line 1 and 4) and tram services all stop nearby.

This design hotel is provided by a gym, Hamman and outdoor pool with panoramic city views. The rooms are equipped with 1 queen bed and sofa bed. They have air conditioning, a minibar, satellite TV with video games and free Wi.Fi access.

Located 5 minutes walking distance from Conference Venue, is located only 300 meters away from Placa de les Glories Catalanes. The hotel has excellent communications with the historic Barcelona city centre by Metro lines 1 and 4. It is a short walk to the famous Agbar Tower and Bogatell beach is also within walking distance.

Rooms at the Amrey Diagonal are bright and modern,all are fully soundproofed with free Wi.Fi. Rooms on the higher floors offer great views, some of Barcelona highlights such as Sagrada Familia.
